Your body is smarter than you think. It's not just some meat suit you wear around--it is, in itself, an organism that knows what it needs to thrive and survive. Why is it so hard to lose weight?
The human body is an ever-evolving machine. Back when we were hunters and gatherers, survival depended on food supply. Lack of food could literally lead to death.
So the body adapted: when food supply is low, the body's functions slow down, which reduces the need for energy (and food).
That's how it managed to stay alive during periods of famine. Even when food was available, it never was three meals a day. Our ancestors would hunt, share their loot, feast for a day or two, and seek food again.
